Boat trips and water sports in Malta: how to choose

Wittylama · CC BY-SA 4.0

Wind matters more than the calendar: a trip can change or cancel on the day, so plan your sea day early in your stay and you'll have room to move it. After that, it comes down to two questions: do you want someone else at the helm or to take it yourself, and how many of you are there?

The essentials

  • Just get me on a boat: a shared trip.
  • A group that wants its own pace: boat hire, with a skipper if nobody wants to drive.
  • Adrenaline: jet skis, 18 and over.
  • Never dived before: a lesson with an instructor, no certificate needed.
  • With music: a boat party.

Trips to Comino and Gozo

The four formats differ mainly in how long you're at sea and how many people you share it with. Before paying, check the departure point, transport and what's included on each page.

Hiring your own boat

The boat is yours for a few hours: you decide where to anchor and how long to stay. The Fiat Boat, a Fiat 500 converted into a motorboat, suits a short spin and odd-looking photos. The Hydra 530 and Scorpion Open Boat are for bigger groups who want to spend the day cove-hopping; on these two the minimum age is 21 and you can add a skipper.

Whoever takes the helm has to be sober and listen to the operator about that day's wind. Bring water, a cool box, a speaker and snorkel gear, remember fuel is extra, and anchor on sand rather than seagrass.

Jet skis: free ride or set route

With jet ski hire, you choose how long you're out. The Jet Ski Safari is different: a coastal route from the Blue Grotto to the Grand Harbour, past cliffs and fortifications seen from the water.

Both need you to be an adult with decent reflexes, so save them for a day when you've slept. You'll get soaked: leave behind anything that can't get wet.

Your first dive

Some divers come here just for this water: great visibility, caves and wrecks sunk on purpose for diving. You don't need a certificate to start, because the diving lesson is with an instructor at shallow depth.

Two things people forget: don't leave it until your last day, as you have to wait before flying after a dive (your instructor will tell you how long), and if you've got a cold, move it, because equalising your ears will be hard. A hangover doesn't mix with a tank either.

Dolphins: no promises

The dolphin spotting tour is exactly that: going out to look for them. They're wild animals and nobody can guarantee they'll show up. Go for the boat ride and treat any sighting as a bonus. If you get seasick easily, bring a tablet.

Boat parties

A boat party is another kind of plan altogether: music, a DJ, a crowd and a swim if the boat anchors. Dates and routes change: check the calendar. Eat something first, wear sunscreen and arrive early, because the boat won't wait.

FAQ

Do I need a licence to hire a boat?

It depends on the boat and the operator. Check the requirements on the page before booking, or add a skipper where that's possible.

What happens if a trip is cancelled for bad weather?

Each operator has its own change or refund terms: read them before paying and keep your confirmation.

When's the best time of year to go out on the water?

June to September has more departures and calmer seas, though even August has windy days. Outside that stretch there's less choice and more cancellations.

Can I go if I can't swim?

The dolphin trip has life jackets for everyone. For hired boats, swim stops and diving, mention it before booking: a life jacket helps, but it doesn't turn the sea into a pool.
