Summer: guaranteed sun and nights that don't cool down
July and August highs hover around or above 30 °C, and the humidity makes them feel worse, even at 2 am. At roughly 25 °C or more, the sea is the best air conditioning you'll find. Save sightseeing for first thing in the morning, and check your room has proper air con before booking.
June is slightly gentler and already has the season's buzz. The week around 15 August, the Santa Marija public holiday, is among the busiest of the year: plenty of locals take time off, and ferries, coves and boats fill up. It helps to have a few places to swim in reserve.
Spring and autumn: the do-everything months
April and May bring green countryside, highs of roughly 20 to 25 °C and easy walking around Mdina or Valletta. The water warms up more slowly than the air, so until late May or June only the brave go in.
September and October flip that around, with a sea holding on to summer's heat while the air slowly cools. The trade-off is the first storms, short but heavy, and windy days when boats get cancelled, especially to Comino. If your trip hinges on a day at sea, leave yourself a spare day.
Winter: mild outside, chilly indoors
From December to February, highs usually stay around 15 or 16 °C, with wind and showers but plenty of sunny days too. You'll feel the cold more indoors: stone houses are built for summer and hold on to damp, so ask whether there's heating.
For nearly everyone the sea is too cold, and many boat trips stop or run less often. What you gain is shorter queues and a Valletta you can enjoy without the crush. In February or March, depending on the year, carnival takes over the streets of the capital and of Nadur on Gozo.
When the parties are on
In high season everything multiplies: afternoon pool parties, boat parties and clubs running close to every night. Many repeat on a set weekday, so look at the calendar before you buy flights, not after.
Outside summer, Paceville keeps going at a slower pace, mainly at weekends, with winter editions at clubs like Toy Room and one-off nights such as Halloween or New Year's Eve.
Festas: fireworks in the next village over
Every parish honours its patron saint with a festa, and most fall between June and September, often at a weekend. Expect brass bands, processions, streets strung with lights, stalls selling qubbajt (nougat) and fireworks you can hear for miles, with petards going off from the morning.
They're free and you don't need a ticket: ask where you're staying which one is on that week. If you're a light sleeper and there's one next door, better to know in advance. Spring also has an international fireworks festival.
