Where to stay in Malta: which area suits your trip

Anton Zelenov · CC BY-SA 4.0

The bed you pick decides how much you spend on taxis and how much sleep you get. Going out every night from the north gets expensive; sleeping above a club gets loud. The island is small enough that no choice is a disaster, but the wrong one costs you hours on the road or nights lying awake.

The essentials

  • Going out: St Julian's and Paceville.
  • Going out, with better sleep: Sliema.
  • History and dinners: Valletta.
  • Tighter budget: Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay.
  • Sand or peace and quiet: Mellieħa and Gozo.

St Julian's and Paceville: on the club's doorstep

Everything is walkable: Toy Room and the rest of Paceville's clubs, bars, food at any hour and, close by, the small beach at St George's Bay. Many Gianpula Village parties also run their bus from here, which saves on transfers.

The catch is the small-hours noise on Paceville's streets; if you want to sleep, look towards Balluta or Spinola Bay, still in St Julian's. Prices climb steeply in high season, and the scenery is more tower blocks and building sites than charm.

Sliema: the middle ground

A seafront promenade, shops, restaurants and the Valletta ferry on your doorstep. The clubs are a short taxi away, and by day you've got Toy Room Beach Club in Tigné for dancing by the sea.

Don't expect sand: people swim here from rock platforms with ladders. There's a lot of traffic and construction, and if you bring a car, parking is a daily problem.

Valletta: sleeping inside the walls

At night, once the day-trip groups leave, the city feels like yours, with bars on Strait Street and tables out on the pavement. It's the best base for sightseeing, and the bus terminus is right at the gates.

Most rooms are in small places in historic houses, many without a lift, and the steep streets with steps are no fun with luggage. There's no beach, and getting to a club means a taxi, because ferries don't run in the small hours.

Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay: more bed for your money

Usually the cheapest option, with a seaside promenade and good bus links. Qawra has its own party spot in Café del Mar, and Golden Bay and the north are closer from here.

The weak point is Paceville: allow half an hour by car at night, and quite a bit longer by bus or in traffic. Several nights in a row will show on your app bill. The feel is more family holiday, with some dated stretches and a rocky shore.

Mellieħa: sand and silence

This is home to Għadira, the island's biggest sandy beach, with Popeye Village and the Gozo ferries at Ċirkewwa nearby. It's the pick if your plan is more sea than nightlife, or if you only want to go out a couple of times.

You're at the northern end, so Paceville means a long taxi ride. The village sits on a hill, with a proper climb back from the beach, and a car makes life much easier.

Gozo: for slowing down

Farmhouses with pools, quiet villages and good diving. Victoria is in the middle, with Marsalforn and Xlendi on the coast. It works really well for the last nights of a trip or for a group that wants a house to itself. More ideas in Gozo and Comino.

It's no base for going out: a club night means a ferry and a taxi each way, and local nightlife is minimal. Leave extra time on your flight day too, since the airport is on the far side of the channel.

FAQ

What's the cheapest area to stay in Malta?

Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay tend to be the best value. Gżira and Msida, right next to Sliema, also have budget options. A lot depends on your dates.

Should I stay on Gozo or visit for the day?

A day trip covers the main sights. Sleeping there pays off if you want to dive, switch off or have two unhurried days.

How far ahead should I book for August?

Several months, especially for the week of 15 August: the best-located places go first.
